How to tell if you have bed bugs. What do bed bugs look like? Do you know what to look for and if you do have them, how to get rid of these bed bugs permanently?
Across the world, but particularly in the USA, recent Bed Bug infestations have increased dramatically. It could now be termed as an epidemic. And what’s more the Bedbug is not at all fussy where it resides. It doesn’t matter to it whether you live on Park Avenue or in a small family home in the Bronx. Or whether you are staying in a very expensive 5 star hotel or rooming it at a backpackers.
To those of you who have been bitten by Bedbugs, it can be very distressing. Do you suddenly flip the bedroom light on and throw everything off the bed to try and see there are any Bedbugs on you? Then you wake in the morning feeling like you’ve not had an ounce of sleep? The thought of these small but painful bugs biting you and sucking your blood has made it a very restless night. It can be very upsetting and distressing particularly if your children are being bitten.
Bed bugs are mostly carried in your luggage, clothing, furniture, or other things you might be carrying. Bedbug infestations are very common in hotels, motels or apartment buildings that have high rates of occupancy and travellers. They are small enough to go totally undetected in your personal belongings, while the baby eggs will stick to almost any surface.
Don’t whatever you do take discarded mattresses or furniture if you don’t know where it came from otherwise you could be bringing a whole family of Bedbugs to dine out on you and your family!!
Uninformed people think that bedbugs are associated with filth or dirty and un-kept homes, but nothing could be further from the truth. They are attracted to body heat from humans or animals along with exhaled carbon dioxide. Bedbugs feed only on blood and not dirt, scraps or waste. While a good clean house and careful vacuuming will help in the control of bedbugs, unlike say cockroaches, it doesn’t have any affect really because waste and dirt is not what they feed on.
Bed Bugs can really be found almost anywhere. While obviously found in beds and particularly in the folds and crevices of mattresses, bedding and carpets, they can also be found inside wardrobes, in your clothing, purses and shoes, cracks in your furniture or in any other dark nook and cranny. Throwing out your Bedbug infested mattresses and bedding, or replacing your carpet and furniture will not work.
Once a Bedbug colony has no more available food, they will just move through the walls and/or unsealed bottom plates to the next unit.
Adult bed bugs are an oval, small and sort of flattened with no wings. They are almost translucent, light brown in color when very young and become a brown-reddish colour when adults. They can be seen by humans and are not invisible – they may just be hiding and out of sight. They’re of a similar size to an apple seed or lentil.
Bed bugs usually feed for about an hour or so just before sunrise. If given the opportunity they will feed at other times, maybe when you’re taking and afternoon nap.
They are attracted by the warmth of your body and the CO2 and will then pierce your skin with two minute hollow tubes. One tube withdraws your blood while the other injects its saliva which contains an anaesthetic and anticoagulant. After gorging it’s self on you for 5 minutes or so it then retires to its hiding place. Bed bugs usually come out at night because of their dislike for sunlight, although if your house or room is always dark they might be out looking for blood a lot more often.
Although Bed bugs can survive without food for between 12 – 18 months, they generally look for blood to feed on every 5 – 10 days.
If you only have a very low infestation of bedbugs they may be very difficult of detect. Often the victim will not even know they have been bitten for some time as the bites are not often felt immediately. It can be a matter of hours before there is a reaction to the bite, which is because of what the bedbug injected when feeding. The first thing you might notice is a desire to scratch. The bites maybe in a cluster or row and can be all over your body. If there is an infestation then of course you can be literally covered in bites head to toe!

The next obvious step for you is to eliminate this embarrassing problem once and for all. These are the facts. Bedbug infestation is happening now at an alarming and dramatically increasing level all round the world but particularly here in the United States. Once you’ve found them in your bedding, the only thing left to do is exterminate them plus of course get rid of the Bedbug rash. But do you know how to achieve that?
Many people spend a lot of money with the pest control companies mostly with no success, or they then try home remedies which also don’t work. Some people even take more drastic action and completely clean out their home of all the bedding, furniture and carpets! These actions may be understandable, but isn't an effective Bedbugs remedy or extermination because they just hide in any crevice or crack in the walls or anywhere else that’s dark and small. Anywhere that a credit card could slide into, Bedbugs can live ‘happily ever after’ and breed!!
